Yes, what weekend is that? 00:02:59 Speaker 4: August fifteenth, so we're just over a month out. Just yeah, how do you feel right now? 00:03:04 Speaker 3: Man? Like, just I mean we did a little six hour plus WEX hour we some bike this weekend. It was the back half. I mean I definitely like felt a lot more fit than the twelve hour bike just going up the switchback, So I was pretty happy with that. I definitely could have kept biking for a long time after the six hour. That being said, we really didn't bike that month. 00:03:32 Speaker 1: YEA three or you did four laps? I did three laps. Yeah, I let Jeff go first, and then it was just like that second lap. The first lap was okay. 00:03:42 Speaker 3: Well the first lap for me was wet, but also like you didn't know what you were about to bike into. There's a bunch of down trees, a bunch of new limbs down, and so like it was a chaos. And then the rain came like oh, okay, like a little bit of rain. People started dropping like flies. 00:03:59 Speaker 1: Really, oh can't Field them started running. They were like, we're just gonna run Canfield. 00:04:04 Speaker 3: That's a derailer broke. 00:04:05 Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he blew up his derailer. 00:04:07 Speaker 3: Yeah, Jason. 00:04:10 Speaker 1: Jason did one lap piece half lap. And I was telling that and the boys like, man, you think we've built this country off of when things got a little muddy, we quit. Come on, it's America's birthday people. I learned halfway through the first lap that I was richest partner. 00:04:37 Speaker 1: You disgusted on Wednesday or Thursdays, Like, yeah, I'll go with you, give you a little push. And then uh, Kelsey said, you guys were out there about halfway through, and Dodd said, Kelsey, are you richest party. He said, no, you are. 00:04:50 Speaker 3: Well, but I don't think I could have gone any faster. 00:04:55 Speaker 1: Are you gonna wear that backpack? 00:04:56 Speaker 3: And that this was a test day. Gosh, I just like eight hours, bro, Matt Matt Chan Yeah yeah last year okay. And he had a really good system where his wife, sure you just like had one with all of the everything you need, and they just swapped him. 00:05:14 Speaker 1: That's all I did. That's what I was gonna talk to you about. Is what I did. Was I bought three of the same fanny pack, and I had ziplock bags full of my stuff all pre set out, and so all I would do is take off a fanny pack, put a new one on that already had the stuff in it, and take off see. And so the next one, yeah, had another fanny pack, And so all they had to do was take the fanny pack that I just threw off and put the new plastic bag in. 00:05:40 Speaker 3: When I came back through that spot, Oh for your stuff, I. 00:05:44 Speaker 1: Just put a gallon ziplock bag of all my snacks and whatever I wanted switched out, and then I would. 00:05:50 Speaker 3: Just go because I don't really like it on my back. I definitely prefer the fanny pack. I think it just puts unnecessary load on your back. So that's the biggest takeaway I got from trying it. 00:06:02 Speaker 1: I think, where are the ones that I used are? Because they're pretty small. I actually thought about using them for hunting too. If you drop your pack because it has a little water bottle thing, you put just enough stuff in cause you know, the only problem is you always got to go back and get your pack eventually. But we thought about it. After doing that, I was like, oh, this might be a good little like if you went on a quick little excursion and when after something, I didn't want to carry your pack. 00:06:26 Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'll see if I have those fanny. 00:06:29 Speaker 1: Packs try out. They're pretty slim, but they carry enough stuff. Yeah, and then that's like you're just in uncharted territory for most humans. 00:08:28 Speaker 3: Yeah. No, I've done one fifty k ultra thirty two miles. Yeah, and through the mountains of Mounttana. 00:08:34 Speaker 1: Did you do the one here? 00:08:35 Speaker 3: Uh? No, I was recording it, Oh, recording it. Yeah, it's filming, but we like I knew how my body felt after thirty two and knowing that I'm only a quarter of the way done would be brutal. 00:08:50 Speaker 1: Third of the way done, yeah, roughly a third unless it's Leadville miles, because the one hundred mile mountain bike Grace is like one hundred and five miles. Yeah. 00:09:00 Speaker 3: I learned that. Yeah, because you know, Okay, I'm still mad about this. You know how at like mile ninety nine they have like all of the past champions, Like I think on the sides, I think I was just head down at that point twice, I'm sure, like you said, like ninety something, ninety something, and then like it got to a point where it's like kegett kee kee keek and Keegan. 00:09:20 Speaker 1: Oh. 00:09:20 Speaker 3: I'm like, well, like, okay, clearly we're close. Yeah we we we still had five miles. Yeah, yeah, but it makes sense because you got to go obviously back into town. 00:09:29 Speaker 1: Well yeah, the hard part was I like somebody's like as hundred mile race, but it's one hundred and four miles. And then on my garment, I was at one hundred and four miles and I could not see the finish line. 00:09:40 Speaker 3: Were you at least on the pavement, Oh you're. 00:09:42 Speaker 1: Still I'm still in that gravel like incline, the whatever that thing is. It's not it's not flat, it's not downhill. No, it's kind of uphill, and usually. 00:09:55 Speaker 3: The winds in your face. I didn't see how he was doing. I just look over at him and his hand has soaked in blood. You wouldn't take it out because it's probably plugging the hole. 00:11:17 Speaker 3: Somewhat side story, we were at this archery competition. In one of the competitions where you had to shoot a balloon from a distance and my balloon actually I shot it, but it didn't pop. I was like, oh I missed, and then I went through. I was shooting with the fireman. We saw it hit the middle, but it didn't pop. It just went through. Like, oh, this is a good example of why you don't, like take a knife out of it. 00:11:41 Speaker 1: Oh it went through the balloon. 00:11:42 Speaker 3: Yeah, well of it, Like this is a good example of why you don't. Yeah, I don't want to take out the knife. If you get shanked by a knife. Uh yeah. 00:11:51 Speaker 4: Like for the chest cavity, for sure, you could you can actually probably yeah, you could actually probably save save it a lot if you don't open that, because once you open it up, then you have to like well, because you're so when you inhale, it's it's backwards. What you think, like when you inhale, there's negative pressure and it creates your body. 00:12:10 Speaker 1: Yeah. 00:12:11 Speaker 4: Once what however, works the wants the diaphragm and so anyways, if you puncture a hole in it, they can't gain that. They can't keep that pressure in there, so you have to like put a chest seal on it and that would that would and that would keep the pressure. 00:12:26 Speaker 2: Uh in your chest cavity. 00:12:28 Speaker 4: So like that's the same thing if you just have the weapons still in there, plugging the whole pretty plugging, it's helping plug the hole. 00:12:34 Speaker 3: It's not great. 00:12:35 Speaker 4: Yeah, having a j web right web spontaneous pneumothorax. 00:12:40 Speaker 1: Yeah, he apparently some people have these like little scabs on there or whatever. The way that it was explained to me on your ungs and he was. He brought a dumbbell down and did embraced and it popped one of those and so he finished the workout and was just like very short of breath. Went home. The wife was like, you've got COVID, go sleep downstairs, and he just kept getting worse and worse. But no, like COVID symptoms, couldn't breathe collapses lung and so they had to put a port in here where they basically bleed the pressure out in it and it pops your lung. 00:13:15 Speaker 3: Back of Yeah, this is peak COVID. 00:13:18 Speaker 2: Probably a little past somewhere there. 00:13:21 Speaker 3: Yeah, like crazy he made it. 00:13:23 Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's like and it's called spontaneous because sometimes it can literally just happen to like random people. 00:13:29 Speaker 2: They say it's. 00:13:30 Speaker 1: Pressure, like when he brought the dumbbell down, it expelled and popped it open. 00:13:34 Speaker 4: They say, if you're thin, a thinner male is probably like the most likely for it to happen to, which I really don't know why, but that's like this, it's just true that a thin male is can get spontaneous Numo Thorax. 00:13:47 Speaker 3: Gotcha crazy. I have a question for you, Rich when you were training for Leadville, how did that fitness correlate for you like in the mountains. I might have already asked you this, but like. 00:13:59 Speaker 1: The man and I've done so many different things to prepare, Like you know, we kind of talked early on. I don't know what podcast number it was, but I mean when I was training for the Games, it was right at like right before getting ready for the mountains, and I always felt really good. Yeah, I've always been able to move in the mountains. Training for Leadville was always good. I think there is a balance to just cardio fitness plus some strength and endurance stuff, where even when I was Leadville training, I was still crossfitting every day. So I think the blend of both of those was perfect. And I think that's kind of how we've structured a lot of what we do with maham Hunt is we do a lot of endurance stuff, but we also hit that short intensity piece pretty regularly. I would say, you know, if it is it is specialized CrossFit, which is basically what I was doing. I was doing when I was doing Leadville. My CrossFit sessions were a little bit more intense, a lot of leg leg stuff obviously strength, and then core and. 00:14:58 Speaker 3: Upper body in during stuff. 00:15:00 Speaker 1: Because when I was talking to that, he was like, I feel like that's kind of the most bang for the buck that you guys, like crossfitters can maintain, like mountain bikers get super fatigued upper body as it goes on, And so that was one of the things that helped me a ton was I never felt weak in my core or upper body on that lead It was just really long. 00:15:23 Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like all that translates well, like because it's the same thing I would say for like mountain bikers, where they think, well, I just need to have strong legs and that's all I need, so they neglect the corn and the shoulders and the upper body. 00:15:35 Speaker 2: Same thing for backcountry hunters. They're like, I just needed to do it. You need to go hike with my ruck on. 00:15:39 Speaker 4: You're like, well, no, you're gonna have the core and shoulder fatigue carrying that pack and then god forbid you kill something like you're already your upper body is already blown. And now you're like, I mean, now you're adding weight to your pack and now you're extra tired. 00:15:54 Speaker 3: Something we didn't talk about at the Elk camp that I wish we did it was like how to actually properly put on your pack when it is heavy, Yeah, which I have had or I've heard stories of guys completely messing up their backs, oh, just getting it on their back, especially. 00:16:12 Speaker 1: If you We did a little bit of that with our group. 00:16:14 Speaker 2: Yeah, we didn't. 00:16:16 Speaker 3: We did roll. I showed them how to like roll. 00:16:18 Speaker 4: Into it, okay, And I mean that I think the biggest thing would be like use if you, if you're with people, use people around you. Just like everyone going scatter and put their own back up. You help him and then they put. 00:16:31 Speaker 1: That and look around, you know, use whatever the hillside or some blowdown or something like that to get it up on. Even That's what I was. 00:16:41 Speaker 3: Remember which group, Yeah, I think it's day one where. 00:16:43 Speaker 1: I told them, hey, when you want to rest, get it on, get on some like just sit there. Yeah, with it sitting there, you're almost just hanging there. But it helps take a load off thet I learned that the first time. When we in Colorado. There was like anytime I could find a tree and I needed to break, we just set it on that tree. 00:17:01 Speaker 3: It's funny when you're doing stuff like that, you're like just trying to like engineer a system that makes it easier than you. When you find when you're like, oh yeah, there is finally. 00:17:10 Speaker 1: Yeah, I got somethin where I would pull up on his I don't I don't know what they in the West they call him brow tinnes. But I'd pull up on his brow tines for like two or three minutes, oh yeah, just to get him off my back a little bit. And then I would grab the bottoms and push up for five minutes, so like pull push, you know it. 00:17:28 Speaker 3: Was I do a little bit the shimmy, yeah, like I want that backpack to be in the middle of my back. 00:17:34 Speaker 1: Yeah. 00:17:35 Speaker 3: And sometimes when I feel like sagging a little bit and I already have this maxed out, I just I don't know, bend over and give it a little oh yeah, well pop pop up. That's nice. 00:17:46 Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll rotate through, getting it on my hips a little bit more. Yeah, cranking it up on my shoulders for a little bit, back and forth. It just gives me something. I know. People are like, wow, just leave it on your hips, blah blah blah, and I'm like cool, I've got a pretty good upper body strength and i'ms a little bit and so and it gives me mentally, like all right, five minutes up on the traps, but also like five minutes on the hip. 00:18:09 Speaker 3: The truck. 00:18:09 Speaker 2: Get it doneah, I like to do uh. 00:18:13 Speaker 4: Obviously being a firefighter is so similar, like rolling into the pack like show That's why I showed people how to roll. 00:18:18 Speaker 2: Into a pack. 00:18:19 Speaker 4: You know, you put it, you know, like when you do escape, like put your arms in, tighten the shoulder straps and then you roll over with like get a couple, get get some momentum, and then roll over, and especially we have someone helping you to roll over a little bit, leave the hip straps loose because then you can kind of get up on all fours and then stand up and then get that strap on. The same thing with like like what you're saying, do that little shimmy is like I'll just bend over and let my back let it just rest on my back so it's off my shoulders and my hips entirely, and I'll just like kind of sit there bent over. If there's not somewhere to rest, just like let it sit on your back, and you can stand up and get that way back on you again, just because you're letting gravity put it just smack. 00:18:57 Speaker 2: On you instead of like pulling you. 00:19:00 Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, And a couple of guys wanted to like take off their packs might do not do that. 00:19:06 Speaker 1: No, no, no, don't ever do that. 00:19:08 Speaker 3: Don't take because you're not going to want to put that thing back. 00:19:11 Speaker 1: No. 00:19:12 Speaker 2: Uh, that's true. It's true. 00:19:14 Speaker 4: For like, I remember a workout I did. This is very applicable. I carried a sandbag one hundred and fifty pounds sand bag a quarter mile, so four hundred meters, And I remember I was my goal. I think Hobart Whobart had me do it. 00:19:28 Speaker 3: I know that. 00:19:28 Speaker 4: But my goal was to carry it as long as possible without setting it down. And I carried it about halfway. Once I did drop it, I dropped like every fifty feet first time. Yeah, yeah, so absolutely, So that's the that's the problem. Once you take the pack off, you're gonna want to keep taking the. 00:19:44 Speaker 3: Thing is going to get a magnet into the ground. 00:19:46 Speaker 2: Yeah, you have to just like keep trudging. 00:19:49 Speaker 3: Yep, just one step at a time. Were you lighter the years you were doing Leadville? 00:19:55 Speaker 1: The first year I was pretty light. I think I was like one eighty eight one night. The next year I was my normal. I just my body is just that's like homeostasis for it. If I get too light, I start getting hurt. If I my body just will not shed weight, it's sure. So it doesn't matter what I'm doing. 00:20:16 Speaker 3: Probably what body fat. 00:20:19 Speaker 1: Yeah, I have no idea. 00:20:20 Speaker 3: Yeah, it is hard. 00:20:20 Speaker 2: Yeah, it is hard to just like lose a lot of that muscle too. 00:20:23 Speaker 3: I'm trying. I'm on the cutting I would say I'm trying to get some weight. I'm down eight pounds. I'm trying to get below two is like the goal. Because I talked Chan again and he's like, dude, I did it at two nineteen and that was a bigger grat I'm like, dude, you are a freaking. 00:20:41 Speaker 1: He's also there. I don't know how he would lose any weight. Yeah, he's just a square yeah, muscle, no other way to put it. 00:20:49 Speaker 3: He's like, yeah, if I could have like just simply bend lighter, that would have helped me out. 00:20:54 Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, I mean you look at the guys who do really well. Yeah, les who do really well with the race, They're just they're not our side. 00:21:04 Speaker 3: I bet you Keegan is man. I've multiple people that were like, I was wondering who this linebacker was, Like, I'm not even that big. 00:21:20 Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, yeah, what are you weighing right now? 00:21:23 Speaker 2: You want to be under hundred? 00:21:24 Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm like two oh six right now? 00:21:27 Speaker 1: What are you doing to cut? 00:21:29 Speaker 3: Just colories or yeah, just tracking. I'm doing about twenty four hundred calories a day. 00:21:35 Speaker 1: What are you riding a day? 00:21:37 Speaker 3: Uh? Anywhere from ninety to three or ninety minutes three hours every day pretty much minimum at least some some depending on the family. Really Yeah, if I can get out, I'll ride the bike. But usually the family's not doing too well or wife needs something, I'll just hopple and seat two bike. 00:21:58 Speaker 1: Which for me, the position on the Sea two is not even close to the same. 00:22:02 Speaker 3: Hey, riding my mountain bike. 00:22:03 Speaker 1: I don't know why. I gotta figure that out. If the seat's too far forward, too far back, But like my body hurts in weird spots the longer I'm on a Sea two bike, where it does not hurt on the mountain bike. Part of that. Part of that too is the mountain bike is moving a lot, so you are standing sitting. 00:22:17 Speaker 3: I put my clips in that room like made it more applicable, and I swopped like I bought the same seat that I have on my mountain bike and on the seat two bike. 00:22:27 Speaker 4: It's just it's also like you don't there's nothing to take your mind off the seat two bike, Like when you're even if you're road biking, you still have scenery and you're not only think about how much my ass hurd or how tired my shoulders are from holding myself like those you have, like other things like you're looking around like, oh, look at that dog or something like there's something going on. 00:22:47 Speaker 3: No, it's definitely when I can get out and not be too selfish with my time, I'll get out, but you know, still gotta be at home, present dad, things like that, so I'll have the kids running around around me and yelling at them as I'm trying. Yeah. So today's workout was brutal for twelve minutes on three or two minutes off for eight rounds and you're holding so my technical my C two ftp is two eighty okay, And I had to hold a two twenty five for twelve minutes for five sets for two minutes on. That was. Yeah, that's tough. That was That was a push in it for sure. That was a puddle in the end. But for the most part, dude, on Saturday, m hm, so slick. I one of the times I hit a bump and my hand slipped off and I caught myself and I was like, oh okay, that was close. And then I did it again ten seconds after. And when I did, I this knee like I caught myself with this leg and it you know, I can't flex this knee past barely past ninety degrees and it went almost but dude, I thought I my knee was gonna exlode. It was fine after, but the like shocked to my body, Dude, it was it was next level. It was like, you know, like you go to step off something and your legs folds behind you. That's what it felt like. Twenty workouts of that, and then I believe there's twenty workouts of a five K literally that's just for a five K progression, Like it's something you would do like once or twice a week, like Monday and Thursday.
